Statement
of U.S. Senator Russ Feingold
On Passage of the Great Lakes Compact
October 3, 2008
“Now that the President
has signed the Great Lakes Compact, critical protections for these invaluable
resources are the law of the land. The health of the Great Lakes is
so important to Wisconsin and I am glad I was able to help pass this
Compact. I applaud the many members of Congress from the Great Lakes
states, Governors, and state legislators whose hard work brought us
to this point. While the Compact is now ratified, there is still more
work to be done to protect these invaluable economic, environmental,
and recreational resources. Two of my top legislative priorities are
enacting ballast water legislation and restoring the Clean Water Act,
which was weakened by recent Supreme Court decisions, to help protect
the Great Lakes and all the nation's watersheds from pollution, invasive
species and other threats.” |
