The End Racial Profiling Act
Racial profiling has no place in America.
I have introduced the End Racial Profiling Act to require
federal, state, and local law enforcement to take steps to
end and prevent the practice. I first introduced this bill
in June 2001 and most recently reintroduced it on December
13, 2007.
Many law enforcement agencies have made great strides in recognizing
and addressing the racial profiling problem. Even though the
vast majority of law enforcement officers across this country
are dedicated to enforcing the law and to ensuring justice
for every American, racial profiling still does happen and
it must be prohibited. In fact, racial profiling makes the
job of our best police officers more difficult by straining
their relationship with their communities.
Congress needs to act on the president’s promise, in his February
27, 2001, Address to a Joint Session of Congress, that racial
profiling is “wrong and we will end it in America.” Working
with law enforcement, civil rights leaders, and others, I
am confident that we can prevent racial profiling and allow
the important work of law enforcement to continue.
