2009 Digital Television Transition

Congresswoman McCarthy Encourages Constituents to be Prepared for the 2009 Transition from Analog to Digital Television

On February 17, 2009, all television transmissions will become digital.  This switch will allow television viewers to experience improved picture and sound quality.  Digital transmission is also more efficient, which will allow broadcasters to increase the number of channels offered and free up bandwidth for other uses, such as homeland security. While the transition from analog to digital will result in improved quality and greater options, some people may need to take steps to ensure that they are able to continue receiving broadcast television.

If you are currently receiving your television signal from a satellite or cable company, there is nothing that you need to do.  If you are receiving your television through an antenna, however, there are some steps that you may need to take to ensure that you will still be able to receive broadcast television channels.

For those individuals receiving television signals through an antenna, a digital converter box may be necessary following the transition, if the television is not already digital-ready.  These boxes can be purchased in most major appliance or electronic stores for approximately $40-$70.  The federal government is offering coupons to households who may be unable to afford the cost of the digital converter box.  These coupons are valued at $40 and can be requested on the internet at www.dtv2009.gov or by calling 1-888-DTV-2009 (1-888-388-2099).
