The U.S. government must play a more active
role in helping stabilize volatile regions in Africa. Lawless
areas, corruption, and valuable natural resources create a
fertile environment for criminal activity and terrorism. Similarly,
pervasive poverty, unresponsive governments, high unemployment,
and deep social divisions contribute to the conditions that
foster extremism.
We must combat existing threats and effectively counter emerging
threats throughout the African continent. By engaging with
regional actors, the international community, and the U.N.,
we can help create stability and prosperity throughout the
continent, and enhance our own national security.
