and Stability
We must help create sustainable peace
in strife-torn regions of Africa for our own national security,
the stability of Africa, and the well-being of millions.
Somalia
I am deeply concerned about the recent dramatic escalation
of violence and increasing levels of instability in Somalia.
I traveled to the Horn of Africa in November 2006 to better
understand the rapidly deteriorating conditions in Somalia
and meet with senior government officials in Kenya and Ethiopia.
In 2006, I introduced legislation – recently signed
by the President – that requires the development of
a comprehensive stabilization and reconstruction strategy
for Somalia. View a timeline

Darfur
We need to bring an end to violence in Darfur that
has taken more than 200,000 lives and forced an estimated
2.5 million Darfurians from their homes. I was the first Senator
to speak from the Senate floor about the crisis in Darfur
in March 2004. We must support a robust United Nations peacekeeping
mission in Darfur and empower the President’s Special
Envoy to Sudan. We should impose targeted sanctions, as well
as financial and travel restrictions, on groups and individuals
that are accused of violating international law and continue
to threaten stability in Darfur and the region. View
