INAUGURAL OPPORTUNITIES UPDATE

Congressman Wu provided the following information for the many Oregonians who plan to travel to Washington, DC to participate in President-elect Barack Obama’s inauguration on January 20, 2009:

As you know, the demand for tickets to the swearing-in ceremony far outstretched the supply.  My office provided tickets to as many constituents as possible, but unfortunately, we were able to accommodate only a small percentage of those who submitted requests. 

There will be multiple opportunities to participate in inaugural events for those with and without tickets to the swearing-in ceremony.  The swearing-in ceremony will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20, 2009.     

If you are receiving tickets to the swearing-in ceremony from my congressional office:

• I will not receive the tickets in time to distribute them by mail. You must pick them up in my office at 2338 Rayburn House Office Building and present photo identification.  Tickets will be available for pick up during the week of January 12, though I am awaiting confirmation of the precise date of delivery. You should plan to pick up your tickets no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 16.

• If you are unable pick up your tickets by January 16, please notify my office.  My office will be open for a limited time on Monday, January 19, but because it is a federal holiday, access to the Rayburn Building will be limited.  If you have trouble entering the building, please call my office at 202-225-0855.  Any tickets not claimed by 3:00 p.m. on Monday, January 19 will be distributed to Oregonians on my waiting list.  I will not be able to provide courier service or release them to anyone other than you.

• Large crowds are expected for this ceremony.  When you pick up your tickets, we will provide you with a map that indicates where you will enter the Capitol grounds for the ceremony.  Plan to arrive by 7:00 a.m. and be prepared to stand for a lengthy period of time.  The gates will open at 9:00 a.m.

• All tickets are being distributed through members of the 111^th Congress.  Any website or ticket broker claiming to have inauguration tickets for sale is not telling the truth.  It is against House ethics rules for me to provide tickets for sale or trade.  Inaugural ceremony tickets are for your personal use only and are not transferrable. 

• For additional information on the swearing-in ceremony, including prohibited items, restrictions on food and drink, and security guidelines, please visit the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies.

If you are participating in the inauguration in other ways:

• The Presidential Inaugural Committee has announced that, for the first time, the entire length of the National Mall will be opened to the public during the swearing-in ceremony.  Large screens will be provided to allow the public to watch and listen to the ceremony from a vantage point in sight of the Capitol.

• We expect to receive additional information about anticipated inaugural activities, including the parade, official balls, and other public events in the coming weeks.  Please check this webpage for updates, or visit the websites of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies and the Presidential Inaugural Committee.   

RESOURCES AVAILABLE FOR DISTRESSED HOMEOWNERS

Congressman Wu knows that the current economic crisis is hurting hard-working Oregonians.  If you are one of the many people who are on the brink of foreclosure, or you believe that you may have trouble paying your mortgage in the future, you have the best chance of staying in your home if you act now.  Too often, people facing foreclosure wait too long to seek the professional help necessary to avoid this crisis. 

Congress provides funds to housing counseling agencies throughout the country that help people stay in their homes.  These counseling agencies are approved by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and the service is free.

You can access additional information on avoiding foreclosure, as well as contact information for HUD-approved counseling agencies, at the following websites:

• HUD Guide to Avoiding Foreclosure — Through HUD’s online guide, you can find and contact your local housing agency to determine what free services are available to help you avoid foreclosure.

• Homeowner Preservation Foundation — This nonprofit organization serves as a clearinghouse of national HUD-approved resources to help you avoid foreclosure.

Unfortunately, it is important to note that there are those who prey on people in crisis.  A number of fraudulent foreclosure prevention services and hotlines are attempting to portray their organizations as affiliated with honest efforts.  Seeking help is the most important thing you can do, but be sure to confirm that you are working with a HUD-approved counselor, such as those available via the above websites.
