Crenshaw: Congress Headed for Summer Vacation While Americans Still Feeling the Heat at the Pump

“Congress shouldn’t leave its business unfinished while American wallets are drained at the pump.”

August 1, 2008

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Today, Democrats continued to obstruct meaningful energy legislation from coming to the House floor for a vote, choosing instead to vote to adjourn and take a 5 week vacation.  Speaker Pelosi and other House Democrats have refused to consider any energy legislation that would significantly lower the price of gas, instead choosing to shut Congress down and send Members home.

Rep. Crenshaw said, “Congress shouldn’t leave for a 5 week vacation, without first taking up energy policy that the vast majority of Americans support.  Energy is the top issue in every poll taken, and yet the Speaker continues to turn a deaf ear to the voice of millions of Americans who are being drained at the gas pump.”

Republicans have continued to demand a fair up or down vote on the American Energy Act before the August recess.  The measure would lower gas prices significantly by increasing domestic oil production through offshore drilling, exploration of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), and development of our nation’s shale oil resources.  It would also cut the red-tape that has kept new oil refineries from being built since 1973 – thus increasing the supply of American-made fuel.

“Speaker Pelosi said yesterday that she is out to ‘save the planet,’ but she is obviously unwilling to save Americans who are being financially exhausted by the rising energy prices,” said Crenshaw.

The American Energy Act – also referred to as the All of the Above Energy Act –would promote new, clean, and reliable energy sources and encourage energy conservation and efficiency, while opening America’s energy wealth for domestic use.

Rep. Crenshaw added, “If we have time to hold a vote to adjourn for a 5 week vacation, we should take the time to debate and vote on substantial energy policy that will take the financial heat off the American people.  The people in my district can not wait another 5 weeks.
