Agriculture Promoting Competition
I have also fought for legislation to strengthen
and expand agricultural anti-trust laws, and enhance competition
in rural America to ensure that farmers get a fair price for
their products. As I travel to each of Wisconsin's 72 counties
each year, I hear again and again that increased market concentration
means fewer economic opportunities for the men and women who
actually produce the grain, livestock, and dairy products.
During the Senate's consideration of the farm bill, the Senate
approved one of my initiatives to give farmers options to
resolve disputes with agribusinesses. My amendment would reform
mandatory arbitration clauses in agriculture contracts to
give farmers a choice as to whether arbitration, mediation,
or civil action is the best forum for resolving disputes regarding
agricultural contracts.
While I was pleased that the Senate approved my proposal,
we still have a lot of work to do to protect Wisconsin's family
farmers. That is why I introduced the Fair
Contracts for Growers with Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA).
This legislation is designed to provide greater fairness in
the arbitration process relating to livestock and poultry
contracts.
