Agriculture Farm Bill
The Farm Bill, which Congress considers
every few years, is one of the most significant pieces of
legislation for rural communities and farmers in Wisconsin.
I was pleased that the version of the Farm Bill passed by
the Senate in December 2007 gives important support to rural
communities. I was disappointed, however, that the bill did
not do more to make common sense reforms and better direct
resources to family and small farmers while retaining the
critical farmer safety nets. Many provisions based on or similar
to my Rural
Opportunities Act legislation were included in the Farm
Bill to support local food, encourage local renewable fuels
and biobased products, expand broadband Internet service in
rural areas, and help develop the next generation of farmers,
ranchers and land managers.
