Saratoga Springs, NY - Today, Local Congresswoman
Kirsten Gillibrand, announced that she will hold a Veterans Day ‘Thank
You' Reception for local veterans who serve on her Veterans Advisory
Board and Academy Selection Committee for their hard work and advocacy
with Veterans and Military Issues. In honor of Veterans Day, the
Congresswoman wants to highlight local vets for all their contributions
past and present. In addition, the Congresswoman will be on hand to
talk about the current challenges our Vets face in navigating a VA
system stretched to the limit. The Congresswoman will also discuss the
recent Veterans Appropriations funding passed in the House of
Representatives, which represents the greatest investment in Veterans
funding since World War II.
The reception will be held from
11:30am. to 12:30pm. on Veterans Day Observed-- Monday, November 12th,
2007 in the New York State Military Museum and Veterans Research Center
in Saratoga Springs, NY.
"The men and women who serve on
these boards give me the technical and professional advice that is
invaluable to me. My Veterans Advisory Board consists of committed
individuals who are working hard on the important military and
veteran's issues that effect us today" Congresswoman Gillibrand, a
member of House Armed Services Committee said. "In July, I traveled to
Iraq, Germany, and Pakistan and met with my committee before the trip.
Their advice and candor gave me insight and made my trip much more
informative and productive".
Every year the non-partisan
Academy Selections Committee selects nominees to the prestigious West
Point, Naval, Merchant Marine, and Air Force Academies. It is a highly
competitive and detailed selection process for young people who choose
to apply.

BACKGROUND:
The
Congresswoman, who serves on the Armed Services Committee, meets with
her Veterans Advisory Board four times a year. The non-partisan Board
of over 80 members was established shortly after the Congresswoman took
office in January, they meet quarterly and advise and discuss the
freshman Congresswoman on discuss military and veteran's issues.
Staffers
from the Military Museum will also be available to talk about an
important oral history program for veterans. This new program that will
be documenting veterans stories throughout New York State and is in
cooperation with the New York State Military Museum and the Library of
Congress It is reported that 1,000 to 1,500 World War II veterans die
in the United States every day.
The New York State Military
Museum, housed in the Saratoga Springs Armory, opened on October 16,
2002. The Museum is also home to the Veterans Research Center and the
offices of the New York State Military Heritage Institute. Museum Hours
are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. Sunday it is open 12 noon to 4
p.m. There is no admission charge, but donations are greatly
appreciated.
Earlier in the day, the Congresswoman announced
with Columbia Memorial Hospital and the Dyson Foundation to announce a
collaborative effort and new technological system that will benefit
Columbia Memorial Hospital located in Hudson, NY.
