Federal funds will help veterans and high school students prepare for college May 14, 2007 WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand announced that Adirondack Community College in Warren County will receive federal funding from the Department of Education's Upward Bound Program. Upward Bound is a program that mentors students from high school through the completion of college. Adirondack Community College in Queensbury was awarded $250,000, and the grant will serve approximately 50 students next year. “I am thrilled that Adirondack Community College received funding for their Upward Bound program. This program will continue to be a key to academic success for many students,” said Congresswoman Gillibrand, a member of the Armed Services Committee. Increasing access to higher education is a high priority for Congresswoman Gillibrand. Last month, she passed legislation on the House floor that would create a scholarship program for undergraduate students in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. It is important that Upstate New York maintains a highly-education workforce to participate in high tech and other growing industries. Upward Bound helps high schools students prepare for and succeed in college. Participating students come from low-income families, where neither parent holds a bachelor's degree, or are first-generation military veterans who are preparing to enter higher education. # # # |
