Gillibrand Celebrates "Girl Scout Week" | Print |

Today is the 92nd Anniversary of the Girl Scouts of America

March 12, 2007

WASHINGTON, D.C.- Today, Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand applauded the passage of H Res 136, to commend the Girl Scouts on their 95th anniversary and for their commitment to preparing today's girls to become tomorrow's leaders.  As a former Brownie and Girl Scout, Congresswoman Gillibrand understands the important role that Scouting plays in instilling strong values and skills in our nation's girls.

“Girl Scouts help millions of girls gain confidence and develop a strong character.  I am thankful for the lessons I learned as a Girl Scout, and congratulate the Girl Scouts of America on their 95th anniversary for continuing their excellent tradition of shaping the next generation of leaders.”  Congresswoman Gillibrand continued, “I would also like to thank the estimated one million adult volunteers for their commitment to our children and young women.”

There are over 13,000 Girl Scouts in NY’s 20th Congressional District, including the Girl Scout Councils of:

*          Indian Hills (1100 members)

*          Mohawk Pathways (1443 members)

*          Dutchess County (1756 members)

*          Hudson Valley (3926 members)

*          Adirondack (4795 members)

The first Girl Scout Troop was started on March 12, 1912 by Juliette Low, because of her belief that every girl should gain confidence, courage, and the skills to serve their communities.  This year, March 11-17 is designated National Girl Scout Week, a week to highlight the Girl Scout's dedication to community service.  This year's theme is “Girl Scouts Make the World a Better Place.”
