Saratoga Springs, NY – Today, local Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand announced three grants totaling $39,126 in federal funds for area first responders. The Johnsburg Emergency Squad, located in Johnsburg, Warren County, and the Grand Gorge and Sidney Fire Districts located in Delaware County were awarded grants as part of the Department of Homeland Security Assistance to Firefighters Program. The first responder organizations were awarded $12,853, $12,434 and $13,839 respectively for the purpose of purchasing critical safety and life-saving equipment.
"These grants are critical to aiding the important work that our first responders perform in our communities," said Congresswoman Gillibrand, a Member of the House Armed Services Committee. "Our office has been extremely successful in aiding our fire districts and emergency squads with achieving grant success, and I will continue to support future grant applications for our local firefighters and EMS officials as we begin the next application period early next year."
The Assistance to Firefighters Program is a competitive grant program administered by the Department of Homeland Security. The grants can be used for the purchase of critical life-saving equipment and training for firefighters and EMS officials. The 2009 application period for grant will begin in the early spring of 2009. For more information visit www.firegrantsupport.com.
Congresswoman Gillibrand has made the grants process for local federal investments a priority for her office, holding Grants Workshops throughout her district, with another workshop planned for the North Country in the coming months. Federal grants are a great way to help local towns and villages defer expenses and lower property taxes. The Congresswoman also publishes a regular e-newsletter called the GOAL (Grant Opportunity Action Listing) to help alert local officials and community leaders of available opportunities. You can learn more about the grants process on Congresswoman Gillibrand’s “Grants Central” webpage at www.gillibrand.house.gov.
