Saratoga Springs - Today, local Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand announced that she is joining with the AARP to hold a Congress At Your Corner event at the Shenendehowa Senior Center to highlight what seniors need to do in order to receive their tax rebate from the Economic Stimulus package. The event will be this Thursday, March 27th, from 10:30 – 11:30 am. The Shenendehowa Senior Center is located at 6 Clifton Common Court in Clifton Park.

Congress recently passed a bipartisan Economic Stimulus package that will give nearly every senior citizen and disabled veteran a rebate. However, in order to receive the rebate, every household must file a 2007 tax return – even if they did not have to pay federal income taxes last year.

“It is my goal is to ensure that everyone who is eligible for a rebate receives one,” said Gillibrand.

After President Bush proposed an Economic Stimulus proposal that excluded disabled veterans and seniors, Congresswoman Gillibrand, a Member of the House Armed Services Committee, sponsored legislation and pushed for a package that covered seniors and veterans.

For households that receive social security or veteran benefits - but do not normally file a tax return - the IRS has produced a special form that highlights the specific sections that need to be filled out in order to qualify for a tax rebate. Congresswoman Gillibrand will have those forms on hand when she visits the senior center and they can also be found on her On-Line Tax Resource Center on her web-site at www.gillibrand.house.gov
