Hudson, N.Y. - Today, local Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand announced that the Roosevelt Fire District that covers Hyde Park and parts of Poughkeepsie in Dutchess County and the Stuyvesant Falls Fire Company in Columbia County were awarded $51,775 and $68,286 respectively.
The grants are part of the 2007 Department of Homeland Security, Assistance to Firefighters Grant program. These funds are in addition to the more than $2 million dollars announced by the Congresswoman in her first year in office. “It is my honor to announce these very important funds to help purchase critical equipment for our local firefighters,” said Congresswoman Gillibrand, a Member of the House Armed Services Committee. “We’ve had a lot of success over the past year in securing millions of federal dollars to purchase life saving equipment, and I look forward to working with our local firefighters and EMS crews to support future grants.” Roosevelt Fire District, 2nd Assistant Chief Daniel E. Nichols said, “This grant will help purchase a new set of rescue tools for our Emergency Services Squad and better protect the citizens of Hyde Park as well as the 600,000 annual visitors to our local National Parks. The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Programs is an important source of revenue to help smaller fire departments make large capital purchases to better protect their community. We thank Congress for continuing this much-needed source of funding for fire departments nation-wide.” Congresswoman Gillibrand announced over $2,200,000 in federal grants for local fighters in her first year in Congress. The Assistance for Firefighter program is a competitive grant program for firefighters and emergency responders administered by the Department of Homeland Security. Funds can be used for the purchase of new vehicles, training, equipment, personal protective equipment, wellness and fitness, and health and safety modifications to stations and facilities.
