Hudson, NY - Today, local Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand announced that the New Baltimore Fire District in Greene County and the Amenia Fire Company in Dutchess County were awarded $70,247 and $39,235 respectively. The grants are part of the 2007 Department of Homeland Security, Assistance to Firefighters Grant program
"Federal support for our local firefighters and emergency volunteers is critical to the safety and security of our communities, "said Congresswoman Gillibrand, a Member of the House Armed Services Committee. "We've had a lot of success over the past year in securing millions of federal dollars to purchase life saving equipment, and I look forward to working with our local firefighters and EMS crews to support future grants."
Chief John Wallace of the New Baltimore Fire District said, "On behalf of the New Baltimore Fire District we would like to thank Congresswomen Gillibrand for her continued support of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program. This funding will be used to upgrade communications equipment to allow the apparatus and officers to talk to Paramedics, The Greene County Emergency Center and also Albany County emergency services. We will also purchase a thermal imaging camera for our newly formed FAST team, as well as to provide a bailout rope system to each interior firefighter; critical to protecting our firefighters."
He continued, "The funding being provided greatly assists a small rural company in the purchasing of needed equipment. Without this funding an additional burden on the tax payers would be needed."
Congresswoman Gillibrand announced over $2,000,000 in federal grants for local fighters in her first year in Congress. The Assistance for Firefighter program is a competitive grant program for firefighters and emergency responders administered by the Department of Homeland Security. Funds can be used for the purchase of new vehicles, training, equipment, personal protective equipment, wellness and fitness, and health and safety modifications to stations and facilities.
