Hudson, NY - Today, local Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand (NY-20) announced that she will welcome 30 injured veterans and their families this Friday January 11, 2008 at 12:00 pm to the Adaptive Sports Foundation "Support our Troops" weekend. Gillibrand, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, will be introduced by Lt. Governor David Paterson at Windham Mountain Main Lodge.
"I am proud to welcome these wounded warriors to our mountain and to thank them for all they have sacrificed to keep our nation and our families safe" said Gillibrand, who regularly meets with both active duty and retired members of the military. "With the help of my local Veterans Advisory Board I have been working in Congress to improve benefits for our returning servicemen and women as well as fighting for the needs of our active military and their loved ones."
The Adaptive Sports Foundation (ASF) at Windham Mountain ski resort is hosting their fourth annual, three day "Support Our Troops" event for United States soldiers and Marines injured during recent tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many of these soldiers and Marines are amputees as a result of injuries received during their recent tours and are currently in rehabilitation programs at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC and Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. Other servicemen and women who participate have suffered spinal cord injuries, nerve damage, visual impairment and traumatic brain injuries. During the weekend they will participate in ski/snowboard lessons, ski parties, and snowtubing as well as meet with local elected officials.
Following the lunch, Congresswoman Gillibrand will meet with local veterans at the Windham VFW to discuss issues of importance to them and her work on the House Armed Services Committee.
Earlier this year Congresswoman Gillibrand took the time to visit wounded soldiers at the Walter Reed Medical Hospital, Landsthul Military hospital in Germany and the Stratton VA.
