Saratoga Springs, NY - Today, local Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand and Saratoga District Attorney, Jim Murphy held a town hall meeting for kids on the topic of Internet Safety at the Gowana Middle School auditorium in Clifton Park.
After leading an educational multi-media presentation on how to keep safe online, the duo announced Rep. Gillibrand's Online Safety Toolkit, a one stop shop of informational resources for parents who want to learn how to keep their kids safe on the Internet. The toolkit can be found on her Congressional website at: Online Safety Toolkit.
"According to a recent study by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, approximately one in every seven youth between the ages of 10 and 17 is sexually solicited over the Internet," said Gillibrand, a member of the Armed Services Committee and mother of a 4 year old son. "As a parent, I am extremely concerned about these dangers to children and in Congress I am working to provide parents and law enforcement officials with the tools they need to protect our kids and prosecute those who use the web to do them harm."
According to the National Assessment Center i-SAFE data one in five students (20%) in grades 5-12 report having met in person with someone they had originally met on the Internet, 11% of high school students have been "cyber-stalked," and 65% of high school students admit to unsafe, inappropriate, or illegal activities online.
