Crenshaw Joins Taxpayers in Asking “Why?”

Democrat Controlled Congress Passes Largest Tax Increase in American History

June 6, 2008

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Today, the Democrat controlled Congress passed a fiscal year 2009 budget that includes the largest tax increase in American history.  On a vote of 214-210, the measure passed and is set to raise taxes by at least $683 billion over the next 5 years.

In response, Rep. Ander Crenshaw said, “I stand for lower taxes and limited government, and this budget brings higher taxes and bloated government.  Raising taxes is never acceptable, but especially with skyrocketing gas prices, this is the worst possible time to consider doing so.”

In the face of rising consumer prices, Democrats seem un-phased in their desire to raise taxes in order to increase the scope and size of government spending.  In fact, the Democrat budget increases discretionary spending by $21 billion and translates to a spending increase of $241 billion over five years over and above the President’s Budget request.

And while the FY 09budget increases government programs and spending, it does absolutely nothing to tackle the impending entitlement crisis and unfunded liabilities connected with Medicare and Social Security.  In fact, the Washington Times said, “When you divide the unfunded costs of promised entitlement benefits by the number of Americans who work full time, says [former GAO Comptroller] David Walker, it equals $410,000 per worker.”

“Not only does this budget ignore the growing entitlement calamity, but this budget also puts a greater financial burden on the backs of already stretched thin American taxpayers.  It would increase the taxes of every Floridian by at least $3,000.  This comes at a time when families and hard working taxpayers are already scratching their head as to why Congress is doing little to change the economic situation.  I am astounded,” said Crenshaw.

The House Democrat budget raises taxes by nearly three times the largest enacted tax hike to date: the $240.6-billion increase in the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1993.
