ALLARD ANNOUNCES A KEY MILITARY VOTING REFORM BILL PASSES THE U.S. SENATE

October 2nd, 2008 - Washington, D.C. - U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard (R-Colo.) has announced that S. 3073, the Military Voting Protection Act of 2008, legislation authored by Senator John Cornyn of Texas and co-sponsored by Senator Allard, was approved by the Senate late last night.
Senator Cornyn worked closely with the Armed Services Committee and the Republican and Democrat leadership in the U.S. Senate to advance this bill, and Allard was delighted to see this important bill that would improve the voting process for members of the U.S. Armed Services pass the Senate.
“I am pleased to see this legislation pass the United States Senate. It is vitally important to see significant changes to our military’s overseas voting system enacted as quickly as possible,” said Allard. “With the passage of this bill, the men and women of our Armed Forces will be better able to participate in the electoral process from all corners of the globe.”
In 2006, active duty military voted at a rate of 42 percent lower than the general population. Of those who were able to cast a vote, 20 percent were not even counted.
“These disproportionate participation rates by many of our nation’s most dedicated and patriotic citizens are deeply concerning,” said Allard. “That is why I co-sponsored this bill to fix a major problem that has eroded the system. The amendment would improve the military’s ability to vote by instructing the Department of Defense to contract out the duty of collecting military ballots to an private mail carrier. That way, the process can move faster and more cost effectively.”
