As your United States Senator, I make helping North Dakotans a top priority. Often, that means advocating on your behalf with a federal agency. A federal agency is an organization that is part of the federal government. That means the agency could be part of the President's cabinet, like the Interior Department, or it could be an independent agency, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Working with federal agencies can often be a daunting task. That is where I may be able to assist you. While I can't ask the agency to do anything they are prevented to do under law, I promise I will make sure that federal agencies respect your rights and I will make sure any errors in your record are corrected. To determine whether your problem involves a federal agency, it may help to visit the Web site of that particular agency for more information. USA.gov has a list of federal Web sites. Over the years, I've helped North Dakotans with agencies including the Social Security Administration, the Veterans Administration, the Agriculture Department, the Internal Revenue Service, and the Small Business Administration. I am prepared to help you with any federal issue that you face. North Dakota residents can write or call any of my four state offices and speak to one of my dedicated caseworkers who will try to help you resolve any problems with federal agencies. I have also created Frequently Asked Questions to help you with certain casework issues.

There are some limits to what I can do to help you. If your problem is not with a federal agency, there is little I can do. Because of the Constitutions separation of powers, judicial matters involving the courts fall outside of my jurisdiction as a United States Senator. Those judicial matters include, for example, child custody issues, divorce or criminal trials and imprisonment.

Problems involving North Dakota state agencies are also not under my jurisdiction as a United States Senator. Examples of those problems include motor vehicle registration, welfare or state taxes. North Dakota's State Government Website should help give you a start with state questions.
