Officials: 'Iowa will come out of this'

Flood victims in federally-declared disaster areas who do not have flood insurance or are underinsured will be eligible for up to $28,800 in Federal Emergency Management Agency dollars for things like rental assistance, home repairs and medical bills, FEMA Director R. David Paulison said.

Gov. Chet Culver said roughly 25,000 people in Cedar Rapids have been ordered to evacuate their homes as the Cedar River is expected to crest at 32.9 feet.

"Our family has been in this area for three generations now, and to see that devastation and destruction as I flew in on the black hawk helicopter, was very tough to take," he said.

A list of federally-declared disaster counties will be available this afternoon, Culver said.
