DeMint Renamed Chairman of Senate Steering Committee

November 6, 2008 - Washington, D.C. - Today, the Senate Steering Committee announced that U.S. Senator Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina) has been renamed chairman for another two-year term. The Senate Steering Committee is a caucus of conservative senators that includes the majority of the Republican Conference.

“The Steering Committee has played a significant role in advancing limited government, strong national defense, and traditional values and I’m honored to continue to serve as chairman,” said Senator DeMint.

“Now that liberals have gained ground in Congress and at the White House, it will be more important than ever for conservatives to stand strong for common sense values and fight against efforts to reduce liberty. Liberals have vowed to raise taxes, explode spending, slash military funding, eliminate the secret ballot at the workplace, give government control over our health care, and attack our values of protecting life and traditional marriage. The Steering Committee has always been a backstop against these failed liberal policies when other Republicans refuse to lead, and we will work aggressively again to protect the principles of freedom our nation was founded on.”

“I look forward to working with my colleagues over the next two years to secure America’s future by defending our freedom and values and promoting conservative solutions,” said Senator DeMint.

Established in 1974, the committee provides a forum in which senators can work together to discuss and promote conservative legislation and policies. The vast majority of Republican senators attend the weekly Steering Committee luncheon meeting.

Past Senate Steering Committee Chairmen include Senators Carl Curtis (Nebraska), James McClure (Idaho), Jesse Helms (North Carolina), Malcom Wallop (Wyoming), Larry Craig (Idaho), Kay Bailey Hutchison (Texas), Phil Gramm (Texas), Jon Kyl (Arizona), and Jeff Sessions (Alabama).
