Education Student Testing
In the 108th Congress, Senator Jim Jeffords
and I introduced
S.
956, the Student
Testing Flexibility Act, to give states and local school
districts that have demonstrated academic success the flexibility
to seek a waiver of the new annual standardized testing requirements
in the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act.
I strongly support maintaining local control over decisions
affecting our children's day-to-day classroom experiences.
I also believe that the federal government has an important
role to play in supporting our state educational agencies
and local school districts as they carry out their most important
responsibility – the education of our children. Please

As I travel around Wisconsin, I hear time and again from frustrated
parents, teachers, administrators, and school board members
about their concerns with implementation of NCLB. While Wisconsinites
support holding schools accountable for results, many of you
have told me that you are concerned about the law’s
focus on annual testing. I encourage you to contact
me on our nation's education policy. I hope you will contribute
your ideas on the implementation of the No Child Left Behind
Act and provide input on how to improve this public education.
Should you wish to learn more about the No Child Left Behind
Act, I encourage you to visit the Department
of Education's website.
