Russ Feingold: Press Release

Feingold Supports New Tributes for Fallen Soldiers of Vietnam, Korean Wars

Senator also highlights new VA primary care facilities around the state

May 30, 2000

Hartland, WI -- U.S. Senator Russ Feingold today discussed new initiatives to recognize America’s fallen soldiers and support today’s veterans at his Listening Sessions in Shawano and Waupaca counties.

"Yesterday all across this country, Americans paid tribute to those who courageously fought and died for our nation, and for each and every one of us," Feingold said. To that end, Feingold supports the Vietnam Veterans Recognition Act of 1999, which authorizes the placement of a plaque at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to honor Vietnam veterans who died after service in the Vietnam War, but as a direct result of such service, and whose names are not otherwise eligible for placement on the Memorial wall. This honors the hundreds of thousands of Vietnam veterans who returned home with wounds and/or illnesses that led ultimately to their deaths, including exposure to Agent Orange. In addition, Feingold co-sponsored a resolution to recognize the 50th anniversary of the Korean War, where more than 54,000 Americans lost their lives in the line of duty.

"I also believe that, just as we recognize those who died for our country, we should support the people in our Armed Forces today, and the veterans who often fought alongside those we remember on Memorial Day," Feingold said. "That’s why I’m so pleased about one piece of good news for Wisconsin's veterans – the construction of new primary care facilities, which are making health care more accessible for veterans across our state." Prior to the opening of these community-based outpatient clinics, many veterans found they had to make long and unnecessary trips to VA hospitals just to get the basic care they would normally receive at a doctor's office.

Feingold's 37th Listening Session of 2000, and the 541st since he was first elected in 1992, was held at the Hartland Town Hall starting at 10:30 a.m. Feingold’s 38th session of 1999, and 542nd since he was first elected, was held at the at Wisconsin Veterans Home beginning at 1:45 p.m.
