MCCAIN APPLAUDS PASSAGE OF RAIL SECURITY AMENDMENT

September 12, 2006

Washington, D.C - U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) today issued the following statement regarding passage of his rail security amendment to the Port Security Improvement Act of 2006:

"I am pleased the Senate has adopted this important measure," McCain said. "In addition to our efforts to improve the security of our ports, the passage of the Port Security Act including this amendment will ensure that we address rail transportation security."

The McCain rail security amendment is based on S. 1379, the Rail Security Act of 2005. A nearly identical bill passed the Senate by unanimous consent during the 108th Congress, and a similar measure was reported by the Senate Commerce Committee during the 107th Congress. This legislation authorizes resources to ensure rail transportation security receives a high priority in our efforts to secure our country from terrorism. It also authorizes funding to address long-standing fire and life-safety needs for several tunnels along the Northeast Corridor.

"Securing our rail system is a crucial part of our efforts to protect Americans at home. This amendment provides essential funding and additional tools to help achieve this goal. There is little doubt that we have dramatically improved our security capabilities over the past five years. However there is more work to be done and I am glad my colleagues have taken this vital step towards keeping our nation's rail transportation system safe for all Americans," said McCain.
