Alexander Statement on Senate Passage of the Farm Bill
May 15th, 2008 - U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander today released the following statement regarding his vote in favor of H.R. 2419, the Food, Conservation and Energy Act of 2008:
“Tennessee farmers need this bill. This bipartisan legislation includes reforms to better target assistance to farmers who need it, as well as provisions that will benefit agriculture in our state – such as expanding the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable program to Tennessee so that we can provide low-income schoolchildren with fresh, locally-grown produce to encourage healthy eating habits. The farm bill extends tax incentives to preserve the Great American Outdoors, and does the right thing by reducing the tax credit for corn ethanol and giving a more generous tax credit to produce cellulosic ethanol made from ingredients like switchgrass that grows all across our state. It shifts the focus from crops that we eat to crops that we don’t eat.”
H.R. 2419, the Food, Conservation and Energy Act of 2008, passed the Senate by a vote of 81 to 15.
