Alexander Statement on Amendment to Suspend Contributions to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve
|
|
May 13th, 2008 - U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander today released the following statement regarding his vote in favor of the Reid Amendment to temporarily suspend contributions of oil to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve:
“There’s no reason to buy $125 barrel oil to add to a reserve that’s 97 percent full,” Alexander said. “But no one should be led to believe this alone will lead to significantly lower prices at the pump. We need a new Manhattan Project for clean energy independence that puts us on the road to using less oil and producing more oil in our own country in an environmentally sensitive way.”
Alexander is calling for a “New Manhattan Project for Clean Energy Independence” to focus the nation on meeting America’s fuel demands while freeing the country from reliance on foreign oil. He delivered his proposal in an address at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee on Friday, May 9th.
The Reid Amendment passed 97-1 as an amendment to S. 2284, the Flood Insurance Reform and Modernization Act.
