Alexander Statement on Vote for Earmark Moratorium
“While the time-out was not approved, I look forward to reviewing the reform proposals offered by the task force that Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell created to recommend a solution.” – Lamar Alexander

March 14th, 2008 - Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today issued the following statement after he voted in support of an amendment to ban legislation containing specific appropriations for fiscal year 2009 unless overridden by a two-thirds vote by the Senate.

"The earmark process needs fundamental reform, and that is why I supported an earmark time-out to provide Congress time to enact that reform. While the time-out was not approved, I look forward to reviewing the reform proposals offered by the task force that Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell created to recommend a solution."

The Senate voted 29 to 71 against waiving the Budget Act to allow for consideration of the amendment offered by Senator Jim DeMint to S. Con. Res. 70, the Budget Resolution for fiscal year 2009.
