Alexander Statement on Petraeus, Odierno Nominations

April 23rd, 2008 - U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, today released the following statement regarding General David Petraeus, the current top U.S. commander in Iraq, being nominated to serve as commander of U.S. Central Command, and the nomination of Lieutenant General Raymond Odierno to replace Petraeus in Iraq:

“Tennesseans know General Petraeus as the commander of the 101st Airborne Division and as a patriot. He has put us on a new path toward a successful and honorable end to the Iraq war. This promotion is the next logical step for a soldier who has served his country for 30 years – spending the last several years mostly in Iraq away from his family – so that the rest of us can live better lives here in the United States. After completing a 15-month stint as Petraeus’ top deputy in Baghdad, General Odierno is the right choice to ensure continuity in our effort’s toward a successful end to the war in Iraq.”
