NELSON LAUNCHES HOMETOWNS TO HEROES PROJECT 2008

Children Encouraged to Submit Artwork for Members of Armed Forces

December 3, 2008 - This holiday season, Nebraska’s Senator Ben Nelson will use his Web site to connect Nebraskans with America’s heroes abroad.

Senator Nelson’s “Hometowns to Heroes Project” gives Nebraskans an opportunity to share holiday greetings with members of the military serving overseas.  The Web page allows constituents to post an online message, photo or video that will remind service members that they are loved, appreciated and remembered.

“Our troops make a courageous effort year round to ensure Americans continue to enjoy the liberties given to them so long ago,” Senator Nelson said.  “This is a simple and meaningful way for Nebraskans to show they care for our Nebraska heroes away from home during the holidays.”

The theme of this year’s project is “Warm Wishes from the Heartland.”  To participate, please visit http://bennelson.senate.gov/h2hproject2008 to email your submission in text or image (JPEG) format.  Physical submissions on standard sized paper are also accepted and can be mailed to the Senator’s Washington, D.C. office.

Schools are especially encouraged to promote this project through students and teachers, and classroom projects are welcome.  Children can incorporate the “Warm Wishes” theme in their artwork.

Nebraskans can contribute and view postings through January 9, 2009.

“The site gives our members of the armed forces serving overseas a one-click stop on the Internet to see a number of messages and pictures from family and friends at home,” Nelson said.

Nelson initiated the Hometowns to Heroes project in 2005.  This year, he will promote the website through the media and assistance of schools.
