Sen. Hutchison: “College Cost Reduction and Access Act Will Expand Opportunities”
Legislation Signed by the President Today Will Make College a Reality for Americans

WASHINGTON -- Texas’ senior Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) today released the following statement on President Bush’s signing of the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007, H.R. 2669. The conference report to H.R. 2669, passed the Senate by a vote of 79-12 on September 7 with Sen. Hutchison’s support.

“Higher education is one of America’s great opportunities and helps guarantee our leadership in an increasingly competitive global economy,” Sen. Hutchison said. “I am pleased that President Bush has signed this important legislation that will help more families realize the dream of college for their children.”

The Act increases funding for individual Pell Grants from the current level of $4,310 to $5,400 over the next five years and cuts in half interest rates on subsidized Stafford loans in 2012. And, for each of the 2008 and 2009 fiscal years, this legislation will deliver $100 million for Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), $100 million for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and $55 million for Minority Serving Institutions.
