Federal Minimum Wage

I am a staunch supporter of an increase in the federal minimum wage.  That is why I strongly supported legislation to increase the minimum wage from $5.15 per hour to $7.25 per hour.  This legislation was eventually passed by the Senate and signed into law as part of an emergency supplemental appropriations bill (Public Law 110-28).  After ten years, seven million minimum wage earners finally received a pay raise on July 24, 2007.

The minimum wage provisions signed into law will increase the federal minimum wage to $7.25 per hour over a two-year period. Three million of these workers are employed in full-time and year-round positions, yet they live in poverty. Women account for nearly two-thirds of minimum wage workers who are the sole breadwinner in their families, and nearly one-third – or 1.4 million - of those are women raising children. Working men and women around the country will now receive better wages which will improve the lives of their families and their communities.

As a California State Senator in 1996, I was proud to play a leading role in helping to increase California's minimum wage to $5.75. Now as a member of the Congressional Labor and Working Families Caucus, you can be assured that I will continue to support efforts to further increase the federal minimum wage, as well as increased access to affordable health care, extended unemployment benefits, and an effective plan to stimulate the economy and create jobs.
