Small Business
I am committed to expanding the options and controlling the skyrocketing costs of health coverage for small businesses. I voted to expand the role of Small Business Development Centers to help small businesses deal with the rising costs of health care. Improving Access to Capital, Increasing Technical Assistance For small business owners, access to capital and technical assistance is access to opportunity. I support fully funding the Small Business Administration’s access to capital initiatives, including the Microloan and 7(a) lending programs, and voted to approve $17.5 billion in lending for the 7(a) loan guarantee program to help meet the needs of small businesses across the country. I also voted to provide the highest funding level ever for Small Business Development Centers, which provide technical assistance to small businesses. I also oppose efforts to eliminate the Microloan technical assistance and loan subsidy programs. Opening the Federal Marketplace I am working to create a fair and open federal contracting system, making sure small businesses have an equal opportunity to win a federal contract in the $340 billion federal marketplace. I voted to support the Small Business Fairness in Contracting Act, which would increase the share of federal contracts going to small businesses and limit the ability of federal agencies to bundle smaller projects into larger contracts. I support expanding small business outreach centers for women and veterans and promoting fair trade policies for small business entrepreneurs. I am also working to increase contracting opportunities for women, low-income individuals, and minorities by strengthening such key business development programs as 8(a). Improving the Tax Code I support efforts to simplify the tax code for small businesses and to remove unfair burdens on small firms that perform government contracts. I am working to provide tax incentives to small businesses to generate investment, and ensure that are competitive in the marketplace. Lowering energy costs for small businesses Seventy-one percent of small businesses have reported losing revenue as a result of increased gas prices. I voted to provide loans, education and investment to help small businesses become more energy independent. I am working hard to lower energy costs and end price gouging on fuel and other energy costs for small businesses and all Americans.
