MOMENTUM BUILDS BEHIND GUARD REINTEGRATION PLAN

Publication: Star Tribune
Author: Brady Averill

May 9th, 2007 - Sens. Norm Coleman and Amy Klobuchar are helping lead the Senate effort to nationalize a Minnesota reintegration program for National Guard members returning from the war.

They introduced the Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program Act of 2007 with Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., last week. Rep. John Kline, R-Minn., had already introduced the bill in the House.

"We owe it to these brave citizen-soldiers and their families to provide them with all of the support we can before, during, and after their deployments," said Coleman, R-Minn.

Said Klobuchar, D-Minn., "We have an obligation to wrap our arms around those who sacrifice for us."

The bill requires reintegration activities 30, 60 and 90 days after Guard members return home. The seminars cover topics such as relationships, health-care benefits and education. The program started two years ago in Minnesota and has served about 2,000 Guard soldiers and their relatives.
