Hoyer: Democrats Make Significant Progress, Will Move Forward With Aggressive Agenda

WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after this morning's press conference on the past six months of Democratic accomplishments in Congress:

"During just six months in office, the Democratic-led Congress has made real progress on the American people's priorities.  From changing the debate on Iraq and insisting that the Bush Administration be accountable, to enacting the first minimum wage increase in a decade, to ensuring that hundreds of thousands of children have health insurance, to restoring fiscal responsibility, Democrats are keeping our promise to move America in a new direction.

"In the coming weeks, we will continue to fight for policies that defend our nation, grow our economy, strengthen families, preserve our planet and ensure accountability.  In July, we will continue our efforts to begin a responsible redeployment of our troops, rather than continuing with the President's failing stay-the-course strategy.  We will complete our work on implementing the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission, and make education more affordable and health care more accessible.  And, we will complete our work on appropriations bills that reflect our priorities - and those of the American people.

"Democrats have established a strong record of accomplishment in our first six months in the Majority.  But we recognize that our work on behalf of the American people is far from over.  We are committed to an aggressive, positive agenda moving forward."
