JULY 3, 2007
Welcome to the first edition of the Freshmen Update, a monthly newsletter from the Majority Leader's office that will list events and legislation for the month ahead, offer helpful legislative and press resources and spotlight Members of the Class of 2006.
FRESHMEN SPOTLIGHT:
Baron Hill (IN-09)
Rep. Baron Hill, who serves on the Energy and Commerce Committee, has already been very effective in the first six months of the 110th Congress, taking the lead on Energy, Ethics, Fiscal Responsibility and Veterans issues. Last month, Hill introduced the "Alien Smuggling and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007," which passed the House and will help law enforcement officials detain and prosecute individuals accused of smuggling aliens into the US. Click here to read about Hill's bill.
FRESHMEN INITIATIVES:

Below are a few of the bills Members of the Freshmen class have introduced recently. They have generated impressive legislative initiatives.

Rep. John Yarmuth introduced H.R.2289 "Striving Readers Act," a bill to establish the first federal literacy program for students in grades 4th- 12th.

  • Rep. Chris Carney introduced H.R. 2126 "The Working Family Child Assistance Act," a bill to ensure more working class families receive the child tax credit.
  • Rep. Ciro Rodriguez introduced H.R. 2542 "The Border Law Enforcement Enhancement Act," a bill to provide resources for local law enforcement along the border to hire, train and equip additional officers.
  • Rep. Christopher Murphy introduced H.R. 2065 "The Medicare Drug Savings Through Choice Act," a bill that would allow Medicare to offer its own prescription drug plan as an affordable alternative to Part D plans.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES:
After years of Republican partisanship that helped create a culture of corruption, Democrats are operating the House of Representatives in a more bipartisan, fair, and civil manner. As legislation moves from committee, to the Rules Committee, to the Floor, Democrats are allowing greater debate, while ensuring the people's business moves forward. Click here to view report.
