"William Penn and the Indians" - William Penn is shown at center with the Delaware Indians at the time of the Treaty of Shackamaxon. This treaty formalized the purchase of land in Pennsylvania and cemented an amicable relationship between the Quakers and the Indians for almost a hundred years. Chairwoman of
the Subcommittee on Elections

Ms. Lofgren was appointed Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Elections on February 14, 2007. Chairwoman Lofgren believes it is critically important that our country’s voting system has integrity and that we must ensure that Americans know their vote is going to be counted and that it is going to be counted the way it was cast. As Chair of the Subcommittee on Elections, Representative Lofgren is dedicated to holding hearings on the issues and keeping the federal agencies responsible for the administration of our elections accountable for their actions.

Chairwoman Lofgren has served in the House of Representatives since 1994, representing the 16th Congressional District of California. In addition to her leadership on the Subcommittee on Elections, Representative Lofgren also chairs the House Judiciary’s Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, Refugees, Border Security and International Law as well as California’s Democratic Congressional Delegation.

The Jurisdiction of the Subcommittee on Elections

The Subcommittee on Elections handles Federal election related issues. One of the major functions of the subcommittee is its oversight of the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) and the Elections Assistance Commission (EAC). The subcommittee’s jurisdiction also extends to the Help America Vote Act (HAVA), the Federal Election Campaign Act, the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act, and the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA).

In addition to these policy areas the Subcommittee on Elections is also responsible for contested elections under the Federal Contested Elections Act.
