Sens. Wicker, Cochran Announce $262,206 Grant for Vicksburg Airport

Tuesday, October 21, 2008

WASHINGTON – U.S. Sens. Roger Wicker and Thad Cochran today announced the Delta Regional Authority (DRA) has approved a $262,206 grant to Warren County to make infrastructure improvements at the Vicksburg airport.

The project will allow the City of Vicksburg to extend the length of usable runway by acquiring 19 acres of land along the airport runway safety areas.  The city will contract for tree removal within those safety areas as well as for a fence to be built on the west side of the airport.  Currently, the airport is only able to use 4,500 feet of its 5,000 foot runway.

“This project will help increase the usage of this vital aviation facility by addressing safety concerns of Vicksburg businesses and industries that currently use the airport,” Wicker said.  “This type of infrastructure investment is important to boosting economic development efforts in Warren County.”

In addition to the DRA grant, local sources are providing $65,160, bringing the total project funding to $327,366.
