Working For Maine

Maine’s Outdoor Traditions

Congressman Allen recently introduced the Traditional Use Protection Act, which would give states like Maine a dedicated stream of funding to preserve critical land for access for traditional uses, such as hunting, fishing, hiking, ATVing and snowmobiling.

Maine is home to some of America’s best hiking, hunting, fishing, and outdoor riding. The unspoiled beauty and vast open spaces that Mainers enjoy make our home a destination for millions of Americans each year.

Congressman Allen, an avid fisherman and member of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus, has a strong record of support for outdoorsmen and the Mainers whose livelihoods depend on the

Tom has secured millions of dollars for protecting and enhancing Maine’s outdoor recreational opportunities and wilderness areas. He brought funds to Maine for the Penobscot RiverRestoration Project, Acadia National Park, and preserving open space around Tumbledown Mountain, the West Branch of the Penobscot, the Machias River, and Katahdin Iron Works.

From his seat on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Tom has fought toxic mercury pollution that drifts into Maine from Midwestern power plants. This mercury pollution has contaminated fish and moose livers even in remote areas, making them unsafe for women of childbearing age and children.

Congressman Allen co-sponsored legislation to end the commercial harvest of striped bass, which has long been banned in Maine. Commercial harvest of striped bass in other states harms the far more valuable recreational fishery that supports guides and tackle shops and that thousands of Mainers enjoy.

Tom has also fought to prevent snowmobile and ATV riders from discrimination in health insurance coverage.
