POMONA, CA – Representative Grace F. Napolitano (D-Norwalk) today hosted a hearing of the U.S. House Subcommittee on Higher Education, Lifelong Learning, and Competitiveness at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. The Congresswoman joined her colleagues at the hearing in questioning expert witnesses on how science, technology, engineering, and math education fosters competitiveness in the global economy.
The hearing featured testimony from the following expert witnesses: Dr. Charles B. Reed, Chancellor, California State University System Dr. Warren Baker, President, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo Dr. Fred Tarantino, President, Universities Space Research Association Dr. Marshall (Mark) Drummond, Chancellor, Los Angeles Community College District Dr. Susan Hackwood, Executive Director, California Council on Science and Technology Dr. Todd Ullah, Director, Department of Science, Los Angeles Unified School District
During the hearing Napolitano acknowledged the challenges that growing foreign high tech sectors and the outsourcing of American jobs pose to our global competitiveness. “Other countries are taking away high tech jobs from our hard workers,” she stated.
“Educational professionals and high schools must reach out to our businesses and the government sector to further invest in our children and help prepare our youngsters that have such potential to fill technology jobs,” said Napolitano, charting the course to solve the global competitiveness problem.
“We must continue to identify those programs in higher education that work effectively to prepare our youth for global competitiveness,” she said of the role that government can play in stimulating competitiveness through math and science education.
