WASHINGTON, D.C.— “Americans woke up this morning to find that eight years of weakened regulation of the financial industry and failed economic policies of Republicans and the Bush administration are coming home to roost, but the architects of this catastrophe remain deaf to the economic struggles of the American people.  Americans are struggling under record job loss, a housing foreclosure crisis, the high cost of health care, food and energy and Republicans remain out of touch— President Bush called the financial crisis on Wall Street an ‘adjustment’ and Senator McCain said this morning that ‘the fundamentals of our economy are strong.’  That’s just the kind of laissez faire attitude that got us into the predicament we’re in.”

March 8, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Intelligence Reauthorization Act provides critical resources to the intelligence community to combat terrorism and protect our country. By vetoing the 2008 Intelligence Authorization Act because it extends the Army Field Manual’s ban of grotesque and inhumane torture practices, President Bush has failed to provide America with the moral and ethical leadership needed to strengthen our national security and improve our diplomatic relations.

Clyburn Urges Bush to Listen to Army Generals
February 26, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Since the beginning of the Iraq War, many of our nation’s soldiers have been subjected to very lengthy and extremely burdensome combat tours.  And many of these brave men and women have been forced to stay in the Armed Services beyond their original retirement or re-enlistment dates.  The Bush Administration intends to keep a military presence in Iraq above pre-surge troop levels through the summer, going back on his word that the surge would be temporary.  Not only does this burden hinder the Army’s ability to respond to any additional future threat domestically or abroad, it puts extreme strain on American military families.

Clyburn Responds to President's Comments on FISA
February 15, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. –“The President’s claim that continued Congressional deliberations on FISA will impair the ability of our intelligence community to track down terrorists and other individuals intent on doing us harm is faulty, misleading, and entirely incorrect. The expiration of the Protect America Act (PAA) will not impair the surveillance capabilities or counter-terrorist techniques currently being employed by members of our intelligence community.  Our intelligence community still has the authority and resources it needs to monitor current terrorist targets and rogue organizations who may pose future threats to our citizens and homeland."

House-Passed Bill Makes College More Affordable
February 7, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. –“H.R. 4137 allows students to receive Pell Grants year round.  This bill also provides incentives to those colleges and universities that work to limit their tuition increases. And in light of the hardships suffered by those students who had their schools destroyed by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, this legislation establishes a program to help schools rebuild in the event of a natural disaster.  This education package also helps colleges implement enhanced campus safety and disaster readiness plans.”

Clyburn Pays Homage to Civil Rights Icon Rosa Parks
February 4, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. – “Rosa Parks was a courageous individual who, by refusing to give up her seat on a public transit bus over 50 years ago, took a stand for justice and brought international attention to the plight of minorities suffering under the reprehensible grips of Jim Crow and the segregationist practices prevalent in the 1950s. Several decades have passed since Mrs. Parks bravely disobeyed that Montgomery, Alabama city ordinance that subjected African-Americans and other communities of color to unjust and inhumane treatment.  However, her defiant stance against the evils of discrimination served as a catalyst for the civil rights movement and America is now a better country because of her efforts.”

Bush's Budget Priorities Wrong for America
February 4, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. –“With our federal budget deficits expecting to reach near record levels in fiscal years 2008 and 2009, this Administration continues to irresponsibly advocate for permanent tax cuts for the super-rich while average hard working American families struggle to make ends meet.  With our current fiscal year debt likely to exceed $410 billion, this President prefers extending enhanced tax incentives to millionaires and billionaires rather than developing a fiscally inclusive budget that properly protects our homeland, upgrades our public health systems, and invest in our education systems.
