Reid Statement on World AIDS Day

December 1, 2008

Washington, DC- Nevada Senator Harry Reid today released the following statement in recognition of World AIDS Day.

"So often in the discussion of AIDS, we focus on faceless statistics. But today, in recognition of World AIDS Day, please remember that those who are infected with or affected by AIDS are real people.  They are real couples, real families, and real communities right here in Nevada.  As we quickly approach the year 2009, AIDS remains a global killer that surpasses lines of race, ethnicity, gender, age, and income.  It is a vicious disease, but it can be prevented and it can be treated.  With funding, research, education, and dedication to the cause, I remain confident that we can find a cure.

"AIDS will not be cured overnight, but we can make a difference.  With funding for research, prevention and care and treatment programs at home and abroad, we can help reduce the global impact of HIV/AIDS.

"In July my colleagues in the Senate and I voted to approve the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) bill, demonstrating our commitment to helping nations fight the terrible pandemic that takes lives every day.  PEPFAR provides tens of billions of dollars over five years to combat HIV and AIDS, including $5 billion for orphans and vulnerable children.  This program has already had a positive impact on the lives of tens of millions of Africans.

"While many victims of this disease often wish to remain anonymous, they are not faceless statistics.  This World AIDS Day please remember that AIDS is still very much present in Nevada and throughout the country and world.  I will continue to work to combat this global pandemic."
