Reid Statement on Anniversary of Attack on Pearl Harbor

December 5, 2008

Las Vegas, NVNevada Senator Harry Reid today made the following statement on the 67th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor in Oahu, Hawaii, which we honor Sunday:

“Sixty-seven years ago, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt addressed Congress the day after the heinous attack on Pearl Harbor, and referred to the ‘unbounding determination of our people’ that would carry the United States to victory in World War II. Our brave troops abroad and strong families at home made incredible sacrifices for our freedom and our country’s future, which is why we are honoring the lost lives of more than 2,200 of our servicemen at Pearl Harbor.

“We reflect today on the heroism of those who died at Pearl Harbor and of all our World War II veterans. They returned from war to create the bedrock of America as we know it today, and the men and women now serving in our military around the world will soon come home and do the same for the next generation in that proud tradition.

“The Pearl Harbor attack united our country in common purpose and resolve. Together, we will work with the same unbounding determination President Roosevelt saw in us to honor the service of all veterans by fulfilling the American promise for which they fought.”
