Agriculture

In 1787, Thomas Jefferson commented that agriculture “is our wisest pursuit, because it will in the end contribute most to real wealth, good morals and happiness.” Two centuries later, agriculture continues to stand as a pillar of democracy and prosperity in America. The United States produces far more food than it can consume and, as a result, we enjoy a $12 billion agriculture trade surplus. It is also important to remember that the food safety standards we demand of domestic producers are unmatched elsewhere in the world, as is the high quality and affordability of food that American consumers expect.

I have worked hard in the U.S. Senate to be responsive to the requests and unique needs of Oregon agriculture. Having made my living from the land, I know that Congress needs to more effectively address the many obstacles facing farmers, such as estate taxes, low commodity prices, failed government programs, and foreign subsidization of agricultural products.
