Boston- Senator John Kerry today released the following statement on the release of the report “Detention and Deportation in the Age of ICE.” Senator Kerry introduced the Families First Immigration Enforcement Act in response to the Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid at Michael Bianco, Inc. in New Bedford. The Families First Act would require ICE to use safe and humane policies and procedures when dealing with the arrest, detention and processing of anyone involved in workplace immigration enforcement operations. Senator Kerry’s statement on today’s report follows below: “This report highlights some of the consequences of a broken immigration system, including inadequate supervision and poor regulation at ICE in recent years. We’ve heard and read horror stories of inadequate medical care for elderly, infant, and at-risk immigrants being detained, severely limited access to food and bathrooms, and a failure to keep track of who is being detained and why. This report is a reminder that we need significant changes from the top down. I look forward to working with the new Administration to pass the Families First Act and other measures to ensure that ICE enforces the law humanely.” ###
