Unclaimed Tax Refunds

Every year many North Dakotans are owed money by the IRS. The refund checks wound up in the “unclaimed” file because for some reason, the U.S. Postal Service couldn’t deliver them and | Byron L. Dorgan — United States Senator, North Dakotareturned them to the IRS. Most often, the person moved before the refund check was delivered and there was a problem with the forwarding address. Other times, it’s just that the wrong information was provided, or the information provided was illegible on the tax return itself.

Whatever the reason, if your name is on the list, you can claim your lost refund by calling the IRS directly, toll free, at 1–800–829–1040. When you call or visit the website, please have the following information available: Social Security Number, Filing Status, and the amount of your refund from your 2005 tax return.
