(WASHINGTON, DC) -- U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) gave “principal nominations” to four outstanding North Dakota students for appointment to U.S. military academies in 2009. Upon successful completion of a final physical and medical examination, Dorgan said these four students will receive four-year, tuition-free appointments to their selected military academy.

“These students are dedicated, exceptionally bright, and committed to serving their country. They are a credit to North Dakota, their families and their schools,” said Dorgan. “I am extremely proud of what they have accomplished and their desire to serve their country in the United States military.”

The nominations are the culmination of a rigorous selection process which includes a competitive review of the students’ academic and leadership achievements, physical conditioning, and personal interviews with military officials and a selection panel.

Dorgan’s four principal nominees are:

  •  Emily Foyt, a senior at Fargo South High School, has been recommended for appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD. Emily is the daughter of Brad and Brenda Rosten of Fargo, ND.
  •  Nicholas Hulm, a senior at West Fargo High School, has been recommended for appointment for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY. Nicholas is the son of Randy Hulm of West Fargo, ND and Angela Vas of Tenino, WA.
  • Stephanie Salvatore, a senior at Grafton High School of Yorktown VA, has been recommended for appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, CO. Stephanie is the daughter of Major Anthony and Pamela Salvatore formerly of Grand Forks, ND, currently stationed at Langley Air Force Base.
  •  Joshua Beaudoin, a senior at Minot High School, has been recommended for appointment for the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD. Joshua is the son of Steve and Bonnie Beaudoin of Minot, ND.
