Homeland Security

$1,077,242 in federal grants from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for fiscal years 2004 and 2005, awards made possible by the FIRE Act of 2000, a law authored by Senator Dodd that gives local fire departments the ability to purchase new equipment, hire new personnel, and initiate education and training programs.

$500,000 in FY 2006 for the city of Waterbury to upgrade its first responder interoperable communications network.

Economic Development

$750,000 in FY 2004 for the city of Waterbury to implode vacant commercial and residential properties citywide. The city is marketing the land upon which these blighted buildings stood for new construction or new community space.

Education

$800,000 since FY 2004 for the Connecticut State University Teacher Training Initiative. This effort involves training future teachers who will work in Connecticut public school systems. The goal is to reduce an expected shortage of teachers in the coming years.

$350,000 since FY 2005 for the Connecticut Audubon Society to expand the Bent of the River Audubon Center in Southbury.

Health

$300,000 in FY 2004 for Saint Mary’s Hospital of Waterbury to expand its Emergency Department.

$250,000 in FY 2004 for Staywell Healthcare, Inc., of Waterbury to help low-income residents by expanding its medical services in a new Waterbury facility.

$100,000 in FY 2005 for Waterbury Hospital to upgrade its electronic-based patient records system.

Social Services

$400,000 in FY 2005 for the Connecticut Council of Family Service Agencies’ Employment Success Program, a statewide initiative that works in 90 locations with low-income Temporary Family Assistance (TFA) recipients to find sustainable and permanent employment in the Connecticut job market.

Transportation

$10,500,000 in FY 2005 for the Connecticut Department of Transportation to construct a new bus maintenance facility in Waterbury.

$10,250,000 since FY 1998 for the Connecticut Jobs Access Program, which provides transportation to low-income residents, most of whom live in urban areas and work in suburban areas.

$7,500,000 in FY 2005 for the Connecticut Department of Transportation to widen Interstate 84 between Danbury and Waterbury.

$4,000,000 in FY 2005 for the construction of a new access road to the Reidville Industrial Park in Waterbury.

$3,000,000 in FY 2004 for the Connecticut Department of Transportation to purchase new buses for use statewide.

$1,000,000 in FY 2005 for the city of Waterbury to reconstruct Homer and Chase Avenues.

$1,000,000 in FY 2005 for the construction of a new recreational trail along the Quinnipiac River in Meriden.

$750,000 in FY 2005 for the city of Waterbury to reconstruct West Main Street.

$400,000 in FY 2005 for safety improvements to East Commerce Drive in Oxford.

$250,000 in FY 2005 for the construction of a recreational trail connecting Cheshire and Southington.

Law Enforcement

$1,000,000 in FY 2005 for the Connecticut State Police to upgrade communications and criminal tracking technology that can be used in conjunction with municipal police department resources.

$500,000 in FY 2006 for the city of Waterbury to upgrade its first responder interoperable communications network.

Arts

$100,000 in FY 2006 for the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury to expand its exhibit space.
