Information for the Presidential Inauguration

As of Wednesday, November 19 at noon New Mexico time, my office has stopped accepting ticket requests to the Inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama.

As you are probably aware from stories in the news, more than a million people (and some estimates are up to four million) are expected to visit Washington, DC, to be present for the swearing-in ceremonies of President-elect Obama.  The demand for tickets to view the Inauguration has been unprecedented.

Unfortunately, because of this high demand, I am unable to accommodate even a fraction of the number of ticket requests I've received.  Given the very large number of requests and the limited supply of tickets I have to offer, I regretfully must stop accepting ticket requests.

A ticket would have placed you physically closer to the Inauguration ceremony itself, but proximity is not the only way to connect with and participate in this momentous event. Please do not make your travel plans, or your enjoyment of this historic occasion, contingent upon your not having received a ticket.

The Joint Congressional Committee on the Inauguration and other officials are planning to accommodate a large number of people wishing to view the Inauguration Ceremony with large-screen "JumboTrons" along the Mall and also along the parade route.  Please visit the  website of the Joint Committee and subscribe to that e-mail list to receive updates on what is happening on Inauguration Day.

NOTE:  We will be informing constituents at a later date whether or not we will be able to accommodate their ticket request.

IF WE LATER INFORM YOU THAT YOU WILL BE RECEIVING A TICKET, PLAN TO CLAIM YOUR TICKETS IN MY OFFICE

You must pick up your tickets from my office in person on one of the days listed below.  Tickets will not be mailed and can only be picked up at my office during the hours listed blow.  Here's how to get to my office.

We'll be open the following days and times for ticket retrieval:

  • Friday, January 16, 9 am to 5 pm EST
  • Monday, January 19, 9 am to 1 pm EST
Tickets not picked up by 1 pm EST will be forfeited.

What about balls, galas, parties, and the parade?

The Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC), formed by the President-elect, is responsible for most of the official balls and galas, as well as the Inaugural Day parade.  Ticket requests for these and other official events should be directed to the PIC.

How do I get to the inauguration and parade?

Parking will be severely limited on the Inauguration Day.  Visitors are strongly encouraged to take public transportation.

Can I get a Capitol tour too?

Public tours of the Capitol will be suspended from 5 pm on Saturday, January 17, until Wednesday, January 21.

What will the weather be like?

January is historically cold and wet. Crowds will be very large, and you will likely be outside in the cold for several hours.
